What is the bone that stick out below your sternum ?

Is it part of the sternum and why has mine been hurting mostly when and if I press on it. It has been hurting of and on for a few months now.
Answer:
It is called the xiphoid process (the little tail of the sternum than points down). The reason for pain could be due to trauma. Have you been hit in the chest? I recommend you have this checked. This piece of sternum, if broken off, can actually 'float' within the body and cause internal damage to organs. That is why when performing CPR, medics are particularly careful to be above this bone.NREMT-P, CPC
It's still the sternum. You probably have been sleeping on it. The pressure of the weight on your chest all night can make it sore. I have had my sternum have unexplained soreness from time to time during my life and that's the only explanation anyone could ever think of.
zyphoid process
xiphoid process. It is the pointy part on the end of the sternum. Don't press on it, you don't want to chip it off, it is pretty fragile.
xyphoid process - don't press on it, if it breaks off it will go directly into the heart and kill you. as far as the pain, call your dr.
