What is the best way to overcome a pain killer addiction??

I have a friend that has been taking lots of pain killers everyday for the past year an on an off for several more. She wants to get off but she says the aches, pain, and sleeplessness is to much. Is there any thing over the counter she can take to help or just anything anyone can think of besides rehab that will help her get over this?
Answer:
Here is what I suggest to get your friend over the worst part of the withdrawals. The following treatment will help your friend not go through such agony as you withdraw from the medication. To help with the withdrawals take hot bathes with 2c. of dissolved Epsom salts and soak for 30 minutes. The skin is the biggest organ of elimination and this will help pull out the drugs. Use a loofa to clean the pores and this will help pull the drugs out even faster. Drink lots of water and 2c. a day of fresh carrot juice, to flush the medicine out of Her liver. she can take 500mg of calcium and magnesium twice a day to help you relax. Drink chamomile tea throughout the day and evening to help her stay relaxed. Use a powdered fiber supplement twice daily to pull the drugs out of her intestines where they can store. One of the questionnaires in this forum did follow this program to withdraw from drugs and it did help. I've enclosed a link where you can read his response to this program. If you have any further questions please let me know,

I know how she feels...the best thing for her is talk with her doc. they will help her, if it's been that long she's been doin this rehab may be the best thing for her! Over the counter not sure there much if anything that will help! If she's not wanting rehab thing just tell her to call doc, they can give her meds that will help her with the addiction! best of luck to ur friend! It's hard but she'll find a way!
take care
have a good ngiht!
never had a painkiller addiction.but i do know that 3 to 4 cups of green tea and/or chamomile tea per day can work wonders for pai n,especially in the long run
I feel for your friend. I have been painfully addicted to pain medication in the past. This is what worked for me- Tylenol, over the counter sleeping pills(or prescription) and anti-depressants. Most of the time when people take too many painkillers they're try to kill emotional pain, not physical pain. It's one of the hardest things in the world to do. But your friend should really speak to a doctor about his/her concerns. My doctor helped me so much. Good Luck.
Yes !!! your friend should use suboxone. IT'S AMAZING!!!
These other idiots don't know what there talking about. Only certain doctors can prescribe it and you have absolutely NO withdrawal symptoms.
I know how your friend feels. I have fibromyalgia and I have been on opioid therapy for the past 7 years. Sometimes I feel like a drug addict because i am so reliant on pain meds in order to function...otherwise i would be balled up in the bed writhing in pain unable to work or anything else. I see a rheumatologist every 3 months. I don't know what your friend's situation is and if she has tried everything and found that only those are helpful (that's it with me), but if she is not under continuous physician care she needs to be. Then she will at least have the possibility of having it managed. There are a lot of drugs out there that work on pain...there's still a few I've yet to try due to the expense (no insurance). Also, she shouldn't be taking pain meds for sleep...i did that in the beginning and it really is treating the problem inappropriately. She needs sleeping pills. And if she really wants to get off of pain meds, she is going to have to find something to treat her pain...there are pain management clinics that are not just about giving meds. She may need to wean herself off the drug or even take methadone. She also needs support. While there may be a physical addiction it doesn't have to mean that she is a drug addict. If she is taking the med as prescribed and when in pain there is nothing wrong with it. There is no reason to suffer just because of the stigma attached to chronic drug use. No one has problems with people taking beta blockers everyday for years to lower blood pressure, people should have the same understanding. However, if she truly wants to be off the drugs; help her to find resources that can help address her aches and pains, so that the need for med is less. I know that if I was not in pain everyday and if it was only a once a month or less thing that I could deal with the pain issues better, knowing that it would end soon. Help her to learn imagery and focusing techniques to deal with pain; suggest physical therapy, massage therapy, aquatic therapy. Remember to respect her need to be pain free and support her when she does need pain med. Sorry, this is a big issue for me...Didn't mean to ramble, but I hope somehow I gave you some helpful information. Good Luck and I know you are a good friend looking out for her. She is lucky to have that.
I would try and talk her into going into re-hab. They will give her medication to help her, and to keep her out of seizures.
Here we have what they call a "duel diagnosis unit" for alcoholics, and drug addiction. Normally for an alcoholic it takes about seven days for them to dry out", but they come back once each Tuesday for the 12 Step program that AA has. That is their only way to stay free of alcohol is to get a sponsor and if you feel the need for a drink give your sponsor a call and he will be there for you regardless of the day, or time.
I understand that Drug addiction will take more than the seven days, but talk with your Dr. have him recommend a good counselor, or psychriatrist and you will be well on your
way too recovery.
to over come an obsesive addition just stop, but to do so understand why, help them understand but please don't lecture
PRAY for her and i will to.
Pl ask her to stop pain killers. Pain killers never kill the pain but the patient.
Certainly she might have Rheumatism or a severe disease of pain. Therefore give her love and don't scold.
There is no medicine for any pain in this world, therefore such diseases become chronic. This is because Medicine Science doesn't know its' cause; only Alternate Systems of Medicine know it.
Hence i firmly tell that Acupuncture is the only treatment for pain, ask her to follow it.
If it is RA she will have to think visiting us. Our recent research has enabled us to treat RA with 90% success.
BEST LUCK.
Well, there are two options here. She could and probably should talk to her doc about it. He might perscribe some ultram or klonopin to take for the withdrawals. If she doesnt feel comfortable doing that, she could taper or wean herself off VERY slowly, reducing the dosage by half per day. However, you should warn her that it is risky to go about it by herself. Good luck.
Ultram ,clonopin, hot baths yeah. Obviously those people didn't have severe addiction withdrawals. The lst thing you want to do is take your clothes off and have a bath. While puking your guts out in the garbage while you're sitting on the toilet with the worst diarrhea you've ever had with bone chilling cold while you have sweat dripping from you and you feel like you've been dragged through a creek bed. And the leg cramps and severe, writhing body pain. Yeah, I want a bath. Okay listen to J R , she is right and I will tell you a little more about it. It is a drug called buprenorphine. It has been around for a long time only recently now being used as an alternative to methadone. I participated in the clinical trials for this drug three times between 94 and 2000. It is being dispensed by any doctor who wished to by them taking a 14 hour online course. Until recently they could only have 15 patients at one time on it but this has recently changed to 50 I think. The buprenorphine is being marketed under two names. Subutex and Suboxone. Subutex is a monotherapy drug containing just the bupe and Suboxone is a combination drug containing the bupe and naloxone. Naloxone will make you sick like withdrawal if you were to use another opiate while on it. It is to opiates what antabuse is to alcohol. You will be happy with it I think. Good Luck.
look in the white pages for Narcotics Anonymous and get help there. It works.
