What is this type of head gear used for in the medical profession?

I volunteer in a nursing home. One of the ladies who is in the room where I visit someone wears this huge helmut like an astronaut would wear. The woman is not that old but she is very thin and feeble. I don't want to be nosey and ask the nurses but I'm just curious as to why she has to wear this helmut. She cannot move by herself and appears to be heavily medicated. Is this head gear something that helps her to breathe?
Answer:
if it doesnt have hoses going into it its not for breathing...may have a skull defect that requires protection.
Maybe it's the latest fashion where she comes from. More likely though is protection to stop damage to a thinning skull.
